SOCIAL: this rain [warning: science alert]

Thanks Amy!

Its interesting to note one from the summary of NOAA discussions -- we can
blame greenland, but who can greenland blame (hawaii canada sf)? :-) The
thorny knots of weather pattern cause and effects!

Speaking of greenland though, Liz and I went to see a new documentary
called "an Inconvenient Truth"
http://www.participantproductions.com/films/Coming+Soon/191/AnInconvenientTruth

It centers around a presentation that Al Gore has been giving all around
the country and the world on global warming. It brings in some of Al Gore's
personal history and the reason for this passionate plea. And if you hadn't
heard it by now, Al Gore, has become a great speaker, passionate, funny and
intelligent-- 6 years too late you might say, but we've just got to get
over it.

He ties all the pieces of data you've probably heard about over the past
few years, he's got some astounding graphs. Its disheartening,
uncomfortable and downright inconvenient. Scary even... I feel like it
really sank in for the first time -- while we may not be able to attribute
any single weather event on global warming, scientists are attributing
patterns of weather to global warming.

Where does greenland come in? Well if you haven't read about that in the
news here you go:
http://www.realclimate.org/index.php?p=267
(not that that has anything to do with high pressure systems over greenland
mind you)

But anyway, go see it! It's not without hope and is not meant to lead to
despair.

"an Inconvenient Truth"
Comes out in May. I'll remind everyone again later.

p.s. I liked your poem, Adrian. And I'm glad to hear that someone's in a
good mood.

  Thank you, Randall.

For the past few days I have been <articulately> asking "Isn't there
someone who knows something about something who can explain what the hell
is going on with our weather???"

Apparently YOU are that someone. Thank god. Seriously, it is so
satisfying to get a reasonable explanation. 'Cause, it was either that or
end times and you know, I prefer reason.

For the last month I have been asking the question "Why does God
hate us?" And being something of a Weather Geek (among all my other
geekiness) I've been reading all the NOAA discussions on the topic. It
turns out that God does not hate us, but Greenland does. A massive high
pressure system has been locked over Greenland for the past two months,
which is trapping another high over Canada, meanwhile a large low
   pressure
system has been locked west of Hawaii (which has had almost 2 solid
   months
of rain as well). That low sucks up moisture from the South Pacific and
funnels it to the Gulf of Alaska, where it creates storms which would
normally move across Canada and the northwest, but they instead rotate
   south
around the Canadian high and straight into us. These low and high
   pressure
   systems create a self-sustaining mega-system that hasn't moved for a
   couple
   months.

The possible light at the end of the tunnel is that Hawaii has
finally started returning to a normal trade wind pattern and is
reestablishing a high-pressure system. This may finally chop off one
   leg of
the mega-system, so maybe the other legs will start to fall. About damn
time, too. I don't think I can go two years in a row without a Spring.

   Good rain to you all,
the past few days reminded me of a poem I wrote while living in Taiwan
(which has much heavier seemingly unending rain):

bitter, I spit on the day
the day just pisses back more rain

   :-)
Actually, somewhat perversely perhaps, I'm in somewhat of a good mood.
