SOCIAL: call for help!

Hi all, 
Can anyone recommend a friend or friend of a friend
that does data recovery from macs? My hard drive
committed suicide last night, and I would like to
salvage the info I hadn't backed up yet. For this
service, I've heard the prices can range from $800 to
$2000, which even on the low end is probably out of my
price range, but I'd love to talk with someone about
it. I had two recent photo jobs I shot on my that
drive and I didn't back them up. Any help will be
GREATLY appreciated.

p.s. I feel a little disgruntled about the lack of
care or interest or concern that the "genius" at the
apple store showed in my problem. i know they see this
kind of thing all the time, but he tried to convince
me to leave and come back tomorrow after someone on
the phone told me to come down. and then, he kept
trying to push me to go to a place he recommended for
data recovery. then, snidely said, i assume you didn't
back up any of your info, right? grrr......
has anyone had these problems with the apple customer service?
