Southern Exposure and Intersection for the Arts curated this day of
Public Art and Urban Intervention
Saturday, December 1, 11am – 5pm
Situate yourself in the public realm for this day of urban
interventions and public art projects. The Grounded? Public Art/Urban
Interventions Day presents work by artists using the city as a
platform for creativity and expression. PICK UP A MAP locating the
selected projects at Southern Exposure or Intersection for the Arts
or on our websites and start exploring!

Stacy Asher - The Pink Dot Experiment
16th St. BART to SoEx- 11am to 5pm
This project, by recording the ground around us and how it changes
with patterns of human behavior, will utilize the discarded chewing
gum littering the sidewalks and paint them bright pink, using non-
toxic, water soluable tempera paint that will eventually disappear
with the rain.
The Counter Narrative Society - Hunting the Now/ Cazando El Momento
Begin at the corner of 14th and Valencia Streets – 11am to 5pm
Hunting the Now is a bilingual and peculiar treasure hunt that
intends to divulge unique but ordinary features of the present social-
urban development of Mission and Valencia Streets between 14th and
24th Streets. Brochures containing map, instructions and clues to the
unique destinations we have gathered will be available at Southern
Exposure / Este es un juego bilingüe artístico de encontrar tesoros
que divulga cualidades únicas pero cotidianas del presente desarrollo
social-urbano de las calles Mission y Valencia entre la calle 14 y
24. Afiches con mapa, instrucciones y pistas de estas destinaciones
inusuales estarán disponibles en el local de Southern Exposure.
James Goode - Fastigium
Dolores Park (Southwest corner) – 12 to 4pm
Explore the relationship between the auditory and the visual in an
outdoor, social setting: what will be the impact upon the listener
when one aspect of their environment seems to be in flux, while
another remains fixed? A limited number of CD players will be
available on the day of the event so feel free to brinf your own cd
player and headphones. You can also download the piece here.
Genine Lentine - Listening Booth
Page and Laguna Streets – 11am to 5pm
This project offers a place to sit down and talk to an attentive
listener for 5 minutes. Participants choose their desired level of
listenership: 1) Silence 2) Non-verbal backchannel responses: hmm,
nodding, etc. 3) Neutral verbal responses: "I hear you," "I
understand," requests for clarifications, etc 4) Comments, questions,
analogous examples, poems, stories, etc 5) Advice 6) Freestyle.
Sabina Nieto/Melinda Stone - Sit and Dig
Valencia St. @ Rosa Parks Ln. (btw. 14/15 Sts.) – 11am to 5pm
This is an ongoing series of site oriented bench gardens. Wherever
installed, whether the city center or the back forty, each Sit and
Dig bench garden responds to the particulars of the given site and
provides respite and nourishment to the curious passerby.
Kari Orvik - The View From Here
716 Valencia St. (btw 18/19 Sts.) – 12 to 4pm
Be photographed against the panoramic view from the roof of 716
Valencia, which will change soon as construction begins next door on
one of 6 new luxury condominiums. Maps of the proposed sites will be
handed out, as well as information on ways for the public to get
involved in the community planning process.
Nancy Popp - Untitlted (Climbing Performance)
4-block radius around SoEx and Intersection – 12 to 3pm
The artist performs 4 pole climbs. The locations will be pre-
determined but not announced. Explore the surrounding area to happen
upon and discover the climbs in progress.
Sidney Russell - City Sandcastles
Valencia St. (btw 15/16 Sts.) – Start at 11am
The artist creates a cityscape of sandcastles along Valencia Street
between 15th and 16th Streets.
Markuz Wernil Saito - Have a Tea/Leave a Trace
Directly in front of SoEx – 11am to 5pm
You are invited to a simplified and mobile version of the traditional
Japanese tea ceremony.
Joshua Short - Red Carpet for the Commons
16th St. BART plaza (Southwest corner) – 1 to 3pm
This project will involve greeting pedestrians exiting the 16th
Street BART with a red carpet, flashing photo bulbs, the sounds of
cheering fans, and bouquets of flowers.
PUBLIC WORKS AND URBAN INTERVENTIONS JUROR
ERIK KNUTZEN is currently the program developer for the Center for
Land Use Interpretation (CLUI). He has collaborated on the research
and production of a number of CLUI's exhibitions and programs
including "On Locations: Places as Sets in the Landscape of Los
Angeles," "Ground Up: Photographs of the Ground in the Margins of Los
Angeles," "Emergency State: First Responder and Law Enforcement
Training Architecture," "Terminal Island," "Pavement Paradise:
American Parking Space," and "Dissipation and Disintegration:
Antennas and Debris Basins in the San Gabriel Mountains."
