Robert F Kennedy jr : 12th Annual Mario Savio Memorial Lecture

The 12th annual Mario Savio Memorial Lecture will feature leading 
environmental defender Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. speaking on "Our 
Environmental Destiny." The event will take place on Thursday, December 4, 
at 7:00 in Berkeley Community Theater, 1930 Allston Way. Doors open at 
6:30 p.m. Admission is free, but tickets will be required (available at 
the door).

Kennedy was named one of Time magazine's "Heroes of the Planet" for his 
success in the fight to restore New York's Hudson River. He serves as 
Senior Attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council, Chief 
Prosecuting Attorney for the Hudson River keeper and Chairman of Water 
keeper Alliance, a network of 177 groups defending ecosystems and water 
quality across the globe. He is credited with leading the fight to protect 
New York City's water supply, and the agreement he negotiated is regarded 
as an international model in stakeholder consensus negotiations and 
sustainable development.

Among Kennedy's published books are the bestseller Crimes Against Nature 
(2004) and The River keepers (1997). His award-winning articles have been 
included in anthologies of America's Best Crime Writing, Best Political 
Writing and Best Science Writing. Kennedy is also a Clinical Professor and 
Supervising Attorney at Pace University School of Law's Environmental 
Litigation Clinic.

The Memorial lecture honors the memory of the late MarioSavio, a 
spokesperson for Berkeley's Free Speech Movement (1964), and the spirit of 
moral courage and vision which he and countless other activists of his 
generation exemplified. The evening includes a presentation of the Mario 
Savio Young Activist Award, which recognizes young people engaged in the 
struggle to build a more humane and just society.

Presented annually to honor the memory of Mario Savio (1942-1996), a 
spokesperson for Berkeley's Free Speech Movement of 1964, and the spirit 
of moral courage and vision which he and countless other activists of his 
generation exemplified; to promote the ideals and values he struggled to 
advance throughout his life; and to recognize and encourage young 
activists striving to build a more humane and just society.

Activist Award, in cooperation with the Berkeley Unified School District, 
the Free Speech Movement Cafe, the UC Graduate Assembly and the UC 
Berkeley Library, presents:

reputation as a resolute defender of the environment stems from a litany 
of successful legal actions. He helped Riverkeeper lead the successful 
fight to restore the Hudson River, spawning 177 Waterkeeper organizations 
across the globe. He is Senior Attorney for the Natural Resources Defense 
Council, Chief Prosecuting Attorney for the Hudson Riverkeeper and 
Chairman of Waterkeeper Alliance. He has worked on environmental issues 
across the Americas and has assisted several indigenous tribes in 
successfully negotiating treaties protecting traditional homelands. A 
professor of law at Pace University as well as an award-winning author, 
his most recent book is Crimes Against Nature (2004).

Please note that due to the ongoing dispute between AFSCME local 3299 and 
the university administration, this event is being held off-campus at the 
Berkeley Community Theater.
