SOCIAL: gay marriage supporters are marching on the westwood mormon church

I understand the anger, but these kinds of protests are a *really* bad
idea (I understand there's one planned in SF tonight as well). The
problem is that it feeds into the Religious Right's contention that gays
are against religion, and reinforces their persecution complex. If you
listen to any Christian media an oft-repeated motif is that Christian's
and Christianity are continuously under attack.

Worse, protesting a particular religion paints the gay community not as
the oppressed, but as the oppressors; not as the victims of intolerance,
but the perpetrators of intolerance. Do we even know if the Mormons in
SF supported or opposed Prop 8? I know a lot of Catholics that didn't
support it, even as the Knights of Columbus was pouring $ into the Yes
on 8 campaign. Lumping all people of a group together is
called....wait.....let me think......oh yeah: "prejudice". Progressives
are masters of the grand gesture that makes them feel good but
undermines their support in the wider community. This is one of those
counter-productive gestures. Anyone who can rub two neurons together to
make a spark knows exactly how this will be played to the rest of the
world. Those people won the battle on Prop 8, let's not give them any
more ammunition for the next fight.

We are all justified in our anger over the passage of Prop 8. But
remember that anger and stupidity are kissing cousins.
