SOCIAL: Finally a Decent Republican....

I thought Powell's point – that Obama is a Christian and has always
been one, but so what if he was a Muslim – was right on; and going on
to say that he wanted a 7-year old Muslim kid to think he could grow
up to be president of the country some day, and the story about the
American Muslim soldier who died fighting in Iraq, were pretty
awesome. Democratic and Republican conventional wisdom has congealed
around the idea that one must be a devout Christian to be president,
so it was great to hear Powell remind us that even if it is currently
so, it may not always be so.

As to the woman at the McCain Rally, she struggled a bit for the word,
but eventually blurted out 'Arab'. McCain reassured her that she was
wrong, and that Obama was actually a 'decent family man'. So many
Americans think of Arab and Muslim as more-or-less interchangeable
categories, but might be surprised to find out that millions of Arabs
(and a majority of Arab Americans) are Christian (including Issa,
Sununu pere et fils, and Abraham, but also Ralph Nader and Edward
Said), and that of the top 8 countries by Muslim population, only one
(Egypt) is predominantly Arab.
