Hi folks,
This is from Liz Pallatto -- been too busy to sign up my other Gmail account
on social yet.
So I am going to be traveling to Las Vegas for the last four days of the
election to work with the Sierra Club and the Obama Campaign to get out the
vote. Wanted to see if any others out there would want to join me.
Tickets right now on Southwest from SF (SF is cheaper!) or Oakland are still
pretty cheap - $148 RT and I have booked 3 hotel rooms at a average rate of
$40 a night in the old Downtown part of Las Vegas which is pretty cheesy and
fun in a State Fair kind of way. The two hotel rooms I have booked EXTRA
about both doubles so if there were people that wanted to share the cost of
4 nights hotel to bring it to $80 for their stay, that would be possible.
rooms are are the El Cortez Hotel and Casino.
I went to Nevada to train staff there and learned alot about the politics in
play there. People were hopeful that for the first time, Nevada could go
for a Democratic President and bring alot of smaller ticket Dems with him.
Also, I thought that it was kind of cool to work 12 hour days and still be
able to get food and wander around with things to do when in that amped,
campaign anxiety state of being. Plus -- Halloween in Vegas.
IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN hotel rooms and/or joining as a walking/phoning
posse in Nevada, email me. I am going away on vacation so may take a bit
to respond but rooms are booked and I am looking for folks to hang with.
WHY NEVADA?
Lots of better reasons or succinct descriptons SOMEWHERE online but I
couldn't find a summary so here are some disjoined thoughts -- sorry need to
be quick here. strike while iron is hot.
5 Electoral Votes
Nevada is an important part of a Western States Strategy that focuses on the
new population growth in Western States that could help turn the tide
towards Obama (CO, NV, NM, AZ). There is a good Democratic challenger for
a congressional seat in the Las Vegas area, and a good shot at wins in House
and Senate that give Dems chance to redistrict to change lines for a few
other Republican congressmen.
Nevada has gone Republican in the last two presidential elections -
President Bush beat John Kerry here by two points and Al Gore by four - as
well as in eight of the last ten presidential elections. But Barack Obama
feels he can win the state, thanks in part to an influx of outsiders - the
state's population grew by more than 10 percent in three years, with many of
the new residents coming from more liberal states. There has also been a
significant influx of Hispanic residents, a group that tends to vote
Democrat.
One key issue in the state: The proposed nuclear waste dump at Yucca
Mountain. McCain has suggested that the facility could be "unnecessary,"
though he favors it. Obama opposes the plan.
