Stu is a do-it-yourselfer in the filmmaking world. Stu is known for his work in "guerilla filmmaking": using low-budget techniques and visual effects to make compelling films. When there isn't software to do
what Stu wants, he does it himself: he created the original Magic Bullet Suite of plug-ins for After Effects. In this talk Stu will be sharing his views on good experience design and usability. As always, the Distinguished Lecture Series is free and open to
the public, either at Adobe or via Acrobat Connect (details below).... —David
TIME & PLACE: Monday, July 27, at 4:00pm PDT, in the Park Auditorium (San Jose office). Wine & cheese reception immediately following the talk in San Jose.
SPEAKER:Stu Maschwitz, co-founder of The
Orphanage, and Creative Director of Red Giant Software
TITLE:Make It Look Like What It Does: Intuitive Usability
ABSTRACT: Designing user interfaces that people just get is the key to creating software that just works. Often that can begin by providing a graphical user
interface that simply shows the user how the software works. Seems painfully obvious, but it's something that Adobe, specifically, almost never does.
BIO:Stu Maschwitz is a filmmaker, photographer, and writer with a passion for kinetic storytelling. A graduate of CalArts, Maschwitz spent four years at
Industrial Light & Magic before co-founding The Orphanage in 1999. Despite his visual effects background and unique command of filmmaking technologies, Maschwitz places an emphasis on performance, emotion, and story. His work inevitably includes developing
new techniques or technologies, and he serves as Creative Director for Red Giant Software, who turn his in-the-field tools into powerful software accessible to all filmmakers. A champion of accessible filmmaking, Maschwitz wrote The DV Rebel's Guide: An
All-Digital Approach to Making Killer Action Movies on the Cheap, and maintains a filmmaking blog at prolost.com. Recently Maschwitz has been directing TV commercials and was the Second Unit Director of Frank Miller's, The Spirit.
