I think the bigger problem is that more people don't even ask this question Palak - so good for you. I've been trying not to think about this all morning - so good job for being part of my conscience.
> But i cant help but get a little upset over the fact that the iphone that i had excitedly bought a couple of years ago is now 'outdated'. It doesnt have any of the things that 4 g (right) have!
And there is the difficulty of answering you - if we didn't make things better every generation, how would things ever get better? I'm glad email exists. I'm thankful every day for the web. I'm glad i can now video chat from a computer & now video chat from a phone in my hands. I honestly do believe the world is MUCH better off with the communications technology that we have now than we did even 5 years ago. I keep meaning to write this blog post "The iPhone is The Device I waited My Whole Life For" & I will sooner or later.
> What is the fine line between consumerism and getting excited with new technology?
But you are also right & I don't have a great answer. This techno empowerment walks hand in hand with techno lust and techno waste & the answers seem grey and hazy. There is now question to me that all of this is making my life better and the lives of those around me better & it is far too easy to dismiss that irrationally. It is also far too easy to ignore the downsides of this long strange march of "progress."
Tom said this the other day on in another conversation & I thought I'd pass it on:
"I have realized that I can greatly admire a thing, but that loving a thing doesn't necessarily mean I ought to own it. Think carefully about whether you really and truly have a use for it, and whether possessing this thing will really bring more joy to your life.
Whether you have the money available to burn is important, but not the only consideration. Going into debt for something you need or will greatly enjoy could make sense – as could passing on something you can easily afford but don't really need."
