Exploratorium After Dark: 'Imiākea: Navigating Polynesian Art and Science

Thursday, May 6 | 6 – 10pm

Thousands of years ago, Polynesians voyaged over vast expanses of open ocean, settling farflung islands across the Pacific. They navigated without GPS systems, maps, compasses, clocks, or sextants, relying on direct observation alone. They found clues all around them—in the moon and stars, in the rising and setting of the sun, in the ocean swells, the winds, the currents, and the birds. Knowledge of these wayfinding techniques dwindled and nearly disappeared. Today, however, traditional Polynesian navigation is experiencing a revival across Polynesia, especially in Hawai’i.

To celebrate Never Lost, our upcoming Web site on Polynesian navigation, we invite you to join us for a special evening with expert ocean navigator Kalepa Baybayan, who will share some of the astounding noninstrument techniques that have enabled Pacific Islanders to cross the Pacific for thousands of years. Award-winning slack key guitarist Makana will also perform. Only 31, he has toured the world numerous times making regular appearances on the mainland United States, including a recent White House performance for the Obamas. Enjoy live demonstrations on kapa cloth– and lei-making and special films throughout the evening.

After Dark is included in the price of admission to the Exploratorium. Or purchase an After Dark Member Pass for $25 and receive free admission to First Thursday evening events.
