Bepress is currently seeking an experienced Vice President of Engineering. As the VP of Engineering, you will report directly to the President. This position involves responsibility and oversight of all bepress technology from top to bottom, ranging from bepress system architecture to managing feature development down to the office phone system. You'll be leading an extremely smart, knowledgeable, diverse, and capable technical team, so the ability to jump in technically and establish credibility is important. We're looking for someone with a hands-on, results-oriented approach, and the positive attitude required to move projects forward to timely and successful completion. Day to day responsibilities will include: * Oversee all software development, including: ** Evaluate feature requests ** Evaluate feature scope ** Determine how work fits with long range technical and business plan ** Scheduling development * Prioritization of technical tasks for other tech team members * Manage technical crises * Provide guidance and mentoring for junior members of the technical staff * Collaborate with senior technical staff on technical issues * Answer technical questions of all shapes and sizes * Interact with previous and new clients Long term responsibilities: * Implement a (realistic!) long-term technical vision * Oversee ongoing refactoring of an existing codebase * Oversee and tune existing software processes ** development ** operations ** QA/testing ** deployment Requirements: * Strong people skills * Strong technical skills * 5+ years experience leading teams of programmers * 5+ years application development experience Desirements: * Experience with medium to high volume websites * Web application development experience * SQL (particularly PostgreSQL) Relevant technical skills: * High availability web application development and operations * LAMP-based production environments.
