You don't have to go to Reno to make a difference (though that too would be awesome). My understanding, from campaign experts, is that phone banks do make a difference, especially for Get-Out-The-Vote and even earlier in the cycle for Propositions. I think everybody knows about Prop 8 -- Proposition 8 seeks amend the California constitution to deny gay and lesbian couples the right to marry.<br><br>I just came back from a phone bank at the No on 8 campaign headquarters (2278 Market, 2nd Floor - old Tower Records), and it was pretty darn great. We were over 40 volunteers of all stripes making calls from our cells phones. The campaign is working with an excellent communications group (who's
never lost a gay-issue proposition). <br><br>The undecideds for Prop 8 have been identified, and we have 56 days to get our message of equality to 90,000 of them before the other side does. And in case anyone is wondering, the other side has A LOT of money-- and rumor is that they are just waiting for the right moment to drop an enormous sum on an ad buy leading up to the election (possibly trying to buy all of the remaining ad space). We need to be able to respond in kind immediately.<br><br>In other words, if fairness and equality are important to you -- let's get out there and win this one. <br><br>Donate time and/or money (http://www.nclrights.org/site/PageServer?pagename=donor_noon8contactinfo). As we saw in 2004, even though change was in the air, conservatives used wedge issues -- just like gay marriage -- to get their core out to vote. <div dir="ltr">FWIW, phone banking is my preferred activity in a political campaign. You can have a bunch of talking points printed out in front of you for various questions that you couldn't really do face-to-face. You are also in a room with a number of other phone-bankers who you can count on for moral support. Making phone calls is pretty quick as compared to going door-to-door and can switch instantly to different parts of the city/state/country.<br>

<div dir="ltr">Ok, so political season is heating up on Social!<br><br>A question for all those out there. I'm struggling with finding as much time as I'd like to travel to help Obama. Phone banking is a simple way to contribute from the comfort of your own home, but I have a gut feeling that phone banking is not only ineffective, but in fact might be counterproductive (not to mention often miserable). Are there any politicos out there who can send me some statistics/evidence/scientific data/tea leaves that will convince me otherwise so I can get motivated to try that route?<br>
