SOCIAL: Golden Gate Park NEEDS YOU

Randall and all,

A couple of quick points:

1. The legislation IS substantially different: it's
for a 6-month trial period only, which will then be
evaulated by a variety of groups

2. There has been only one vote on the ballot -- about
six years ago, a totally grassroots, volunteer-driven,
low-money effort that was defeated, but not by a
significant margin, especially in light of the huge
amount of money the museums put into a
counter-campaign. Their alternative proposal (on the
same ballot) called for saturday road closures AFTER
the parking garage was built. This successfully split
the vote and neither proposal won.

3. Finally, the parking garage was built! It's open
and largely empty. The primary arguement against the
road closures is now moot.

As a fan of the democratic process (especialy one that
is untainted by excessive influence from the moneyed
class) and a fan of public space I urge you all to
spend just a few hundred seconds to write quick emails
to the supervisors in favor of this long overdue vote
for saturday road closures. It's actually a close vote
on the board now due to unseemly machinations and
mistruths on part of the museums.
