My mother and brother live in the Shenandoah Valley, which will likely play
a pivotal role in the VA vote. (There is an article about the importance of
southwestern VA in this week's New Yorker:
http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2008/10/06/081006fa_fact_boyer)
They are, and have been, very active with the local Democratic organizations
(and the Unitarian Church, also a very progressive voice) and are housing a
fellow who is campaigning for a local young man, Sam Rasoul, running for
their House seat (VA 6). www.samrasoul.us Rasoul happens to be a Muslim,
and because of this, in my mom's opinion, he's not getting the support he
should from the Obama campaign. Otherwise she says the local Dem org and the
Obama org get along well.
My mom's house guest will be there till 10/13. After that they could house
someone else. If anyone is interested in finding out about working in
Rockingham or Augusta or the neighboring counties, let me know and I'll
introduce you to my mom (you'll love her).

Subject: SOCIAL: On Race, Obama, and Ohio: How We Could Still Lose This
Thing
Hey folks -
So as entirely expected by this time of year, I've been entirely
absorbed by watching the presidential campaign. I've been scouring
the interweb for info, obsessing about poll numbers, and swallowing
NYT coverage whole. Today, I read perhaps the best election piece
I've read. It scares me the hell out of me but also makes the most
sense.
From the New Yorker:
http://tinyurl.com/3z6bjx
It is a moving and painful report about Ohio, and how tough the times
are there. It highlights how difficult it will be for Obama to carry
the bed-rock working class whites & how racism can hide a major
difference between polling & voting. Scary & yet touching.
As an aside, I'm headed to Ohio next week.

As for other great links:
fivethirtyeight.com - the best poll numbers sight
270towin.com - check out the historical electoral college maps!
Fascinating.

And the New Yorker's endorsement of Obama touches on some good points:
