SOCIAL: dead time machine

Hello Socialites (Socialists?)

I have a dead Apple Time Machine I would like to properly dispose of. It has been backing up my computer, so I don't want the hard drive to fall into the wrong hands, but I would like to see the machine get reused or recycled if possible.

In the more perfect, cradle-to-cradle world I don't yet live in, I would return it to the Apple Store, and the data would get securely wiped and the machine completely recycled nearby by well-paid, unionized workers under fine working conditions using excellent environmental practices. Since we don't yet live in that world, what options do you all recommend?
